Specify file types to crawl (Search Server 2008)

Note
Unless otherwise noted, the information in this article applies to both Microsoft Search Server 2008 and Microsoft Search Server 2008 Express.
Before you perform this procedure, confirm that:
- You have read the topic Limit or increase the quantity of content that is crawled (Search Server 2008).
Important
You must be a search services administrator to complete this procedure. For more information, see Add or remove a search services administrator (Search Server 2008).
To specify file types to include in the content index
Use the following procedure to add file types to the File Types list.
Note
Adding file types will require a full crawl of the content impacted by such changes.
Add file types
On the Search Administration page, under Crawling, click File Types.
In the Manage File Types page, click New File Type.
In the Add File Type page, in the File extension box, type the file name extension for the file type that you want to add (for example, type doc).
Note
Do not add a period (.) character before the file type.
Click OK.
Repeat steps 3 through 5 for each file type that you want to add.
You can also delete file types from this list for the file types you do not want the crawler to include in the content index. Use the following procedure to delete file types from the File Types list.

Deleting file types will require a full crawl of the content impacted by such changes.
Delete file types
In the Manage File Types page, click the file name extension for the file type that you want to delete, and then click Delete in the dropdown menu.
Click OK to confirm the deletion.
