Functionality Overview
Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 and Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 will reach end of support on January 9, 2018. To stay supported, you will need to upgrade. For more information, see Resources to help you upgrade your Office 2007 servers and clients.
Communicator Web Access (2007 R2 release) improves communication for branch office employees, or business travelers and telecommuters who work at Internet kiosks, which effectively reduces geographic barriers that can hinder productivity. Communicator Web Access provides instant messaging (IM), presence, audio dial out, and desktop sharing capability for users when they are away from the office. The experience of using the browser-based Communicator Web Access is similar to using the desktop-based Office Communicator 2007 R2.
The functionality of the Communicator Web Access (2007 R2 release) focuses on presence information, IM, desktop sharing, and dial-out experience to ensure usability across as many platforms and browsers as possible. Users can still use tools such as corporate directory integration, support for distribution groups, and the ability to manage contact lists.
The desktop sharing capability gives users the ability to share their desktop on a Windows-based computer. Anyone who is a part of the desktop sharing sessions can be given access to view and control the desktop, which means that the flexibility to work as a team is not hindered by distance. Resizing and panning controls enable participants to view the conversation in comfort and audio dialogue can be added to the sharing sessions. Communicator Web Access can also place the call for the user.
The Communicator Web Access servers are deployed within the corporate network and form part of the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 deployment. No Active Directory schema extensions are required when you deploy Communicator Web Access.
