How to Modify Direct Mailer Speed

Direct Mailer is designed so that you can limit the number of messages it processes per hour so that the job does not overload the production mail server. To do this, you modify the Messages Per Hour property that determines how many messages the Direct Mailer processes in an hour. If the Messages Per Hour property is set to zero (0), Direct Mailer processes the messages as fast as possible.

To modify Direct Mailer processing

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Commerce Server 2009 , and then click Commerce Server Manager.

  2. In Commerce Server Manager, in the left pane, expand Commerce Server Manager, expand Global Resources, right-click Direct Mail on <server name>, and then select Properties.

  3. In the Direct Mail on <server name> Properties dialog box, on the Properties tab, in the Properties box, select Messages Per Hour, and in the Selected Property Value box, type the number of messages per hour that you want Direct Mailer to send.

If you set Selected Property Value to zero (0), Direct Mailer processes messages at the fastest rate possible.

  4. Click OK.

  5. Restart Direct Mailer. For information about restarting Direct Mailer, see How to Restart Direct Mailer.

Commerce Server applies the new setting immediately to all Direct Mailer jobs.

Besides the Messages Per Hour property, other factors determine how fast Direct Mailer processes messages. For example:

    • Direct Mailer performance depends on the Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) for Microsoft Windows Server.

    • Direct Mailer calculates the delay value for each pipeline cycle, based on overall performance and throttling settings.

    • Direct Mailer performance is closely related to Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server performance and throttling requirements.
