  • Use Microsoft Purview to prevent some connected experiences that analyze content: Use a new sensitivity label setting or protection with Double Key Encryption to prevent content within Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook from being sent to Microsoft for content analysis as a privacy control, even when these are stored in Microsoft’s cloud, such as SharePoint or OneDrive. This helps your organization to optimize your data privacy needs on a per-content basis using the familiar configurations and end-user experiences available with Microsoft Purview. Learn More

Feature updates

Excel

  • Optimizing loading fonts stored on the printer: This feature optimizes font-related operations by detecting whether the default printer supports fonts stored on the printer, and if it does not, skipping the step of reaching out to the printer to load them. Users have the option to turn off this behavior by accessing File > Options > Advanced > Print and switching off "Include fonts that are stored on the printer".

  • Add table data from an image with Data from Picture: Transcribing data from paper into Excel can be a slow and frustrating process. Wouldn’t it be easier just to take a picture of the information and import it into your worksheet? Now you can, with the Data from Picture feature! To take advantage of this powerful feature, simply go to the Data tab and select From Picture, then choose the source; you can also review and correct the data, if necessary, before inserting it into your worksheet.

  • Reducing slowness and freezes when multiple workbooks are open: This feature reduces slowness and freezes experienced when working in a workbook due to calculations occurring in other unrelated workbooks also open at the same time and in the same Excel.exe instance. It achieves this by optimizing global automatic recalculation to the workbook being worked in, and its interdependent workbooks also open at the same time.
    See details in blog post

Outlook

  • Sensitivity Label scoping between files, emails and meetings: Office applications can now filter out sensitivity labels based on the document type. For example, Outlook email will no longer show labels that only apply to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents.

Office Suite

  • Ability to insert live camera feed in all slides with one click: Now, one can insert a PowerPoint Cameo in all slides using the Insert > Cameo > All Slides command on the PowerPoint ribbon. Further, a user-customized camera style and location can be applied to all slides using the 'Apply to All Slides' option in the Camera Format ribbon.

Feature updates

Access

  • Enable the ability to code sign your Microsoft Access database and VBA code: This update enables the Tools/Digital Signature command within the VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) IDE (Integrated Development Environment) for current Microsoft Access database formats. Signing a database will allow VBA code in the database to be run even if Trust Center settings specify that only digitally signed code should be enabled.

Excel

  • Touch Improvements to Ribbon: We've improved the spacing of buttons in the Ribbon when the device is being used in Tablet posture.

  • Apply sensitivity labels to PDFs created with Office apps: We're allowing you to use these labels to protect PDFs created using Word, Excel, or PowerPoint for Windows. See details in blog post

  • Speed-up filtering when workbook contains lots of conditional formatting rules: When your workbook contains lots of conditional formatting rules, it can slow down applying a filter such as a color filter. No longer! By optimizing the underlying data structure we've sped up filtering.

  • Improvements to Power BI Request Access: We've upgraded the experience for users who create PivotTables connected to Power BI datasets. Prior to the improved experience, when a user tried to refresh a PivotTable connected to a dataset that they do not have access to, they would see a generic error message. Now, a specific error dialog appears that informs the user that they do not have access to the dataset and allows them to click a link to request access from the owner. Once access is granted, the user can go back to the PivotTable and refresh to continue their analysis. See details in blog post

  • PivotTable overlap improvements: We have improved the experience when PivotTables overlap other content in your workbook.

  • Smooth Scrolling: Scrolling in your sheet is now much smoother - no snapping to rows and columns. Learn more

  • Reducing unwanted fragmenting of conditional formatting rules: Check out the improved performance and faster calculations when applying conditional formatting rules to cells. We've done so by reducing fragmentation of data when pasting copied cells into that a cell range.

  • Speeding up Formula Entry: Excel has sped up entering a formula in a cell noticeably by reducing memory usage, making more efficient use of allocated memory, and optimizing redrawing. These optimizations are more noticeable on devices with slower Memory or slower CPU-Memory throughput as well as for larger cell ranges.

  • Copy Paste is more efficient: Copy/paste now uses an index-based search, rather than a linear scan, for more optimal merging. The optimizations are especially noticeable on low-end devices with constrained hardware.

  • New Text and Array Functions: We've added fourteen new text and array functions to supercharge your spreadsheets: TEXTBEFORE, TEXTAFTER, TEXTSPLIT, EXPAND, TAKE, DROP, VSTACK, HSTACK, CHOOSEROWS, CHOOSECOLS, TOROW, TOCOL, WRAPROWS and WRAPCOLS. See details in blog post

  • Disable the Azure Information Protection Add-in by default: Office apps will now automatically disable the legacy Azure Information Protection add-in and use the built-in sensitivity labels to view and apply labels powered by Microsoft Purview Information Protection.

  • Blocking XLL add-ins from the Internet: To address the increasing number of malware attacks in recent months, we are implementing measures that will block XLL add-ins coming from the Internet. See details in blog post

  • Accessibility ribbon: Find all of the tools you need to create accessible content in one place - the Accessibility ribbon! See details in blog post

  • Sensitivity Label scoping between files, emails and meetings: Office applications can now filter out sensitivity labels based on the document type. For example, Outlook email no longer shows labels that only apply to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents.

  • User-defined permissions now support domain name restrictions: When you choose a sensitivity label configured for user-defined permissions, domain names can now be used to restrict file access to all individuals from that domain. For example, you can specify "someone@example.com" or "@example.com," and permissions will be restricted based on either the individual or all individuals within the example domain.

OneNote

  • Take notes using just your voice with Dictate: Using your voice to dictate content is a fast, hands-free way of putting your thoughts into a note—shown to be three times faster than typing! With Dictate for OneNote, now you can simply speak your thoughts to create content. To access this feature, just click on the Dictate microphone icon on the home tab and begin dictating your notes. Visio

  • See files others have shared with you: It's now easier to find key documents in Visio. Any documents shared with you will automatically show up in your list; typically, the most relevant documents to you appear at the top of the list. Note that you'll only see the specific files people have chosen to share with you, so that their other files remain secure. To experience this feature, simply click on the Home tab or the Open tab and select Shared with Me. Now you can find all files shared with you in one place!

  • The old version of the custom autofilter dialog in Excel wasn't using the Windows settings for decimal separators and other custom number format options, but was instead using the defaults for the system region, even if the user overrode those defaults in Windows with their own options. This means that, for example, for a user using the Germany locale who then set their decimal separator in Windows to a dot (.), overriding the default of a comma (,), Excel would still think the normal decimal separator was a comma and that a number with a dot in the middle would correspond to a date, and the autofilter would assume a number like 1.23 was a date (January 1, 2023) and filter according to the numerical value of that date.

The new version of the custom autofilter dialog doesn't have these problems, and this fix activates the new version of the dialog so that it uses the correct decimal and digit grouping symbols from Windows when parsing numbers.
