AOL Instant Messenger, a Better Alternative?

I still think ICQ is by far the superior IM client, but unfortunately the rest of the world doesn't agree. It was back in my later high school days that I decided to switch from ICQ to AIM, because that's what all my friends were using and the sole purpose for me using IM was to communicate with my friends. Within the last few years I began using MSN because it was the main client used within our corporation for quick communication and I have enjoyed it. I am religiously on MSN during the day so people can easily communicate with me, but the past few days I haven't been able to get on. It's sounding to me like AIM has prevailed and maybe I will have to switch back to using it religiously again.

All I want is a reliable communication service.

Use Trillian and get the best of every world. I had the same issue (lots of friends migrating to MSN when I used ICQ). Trillian connects to all of them at once.

GAIM is better than Trillian - it has more functionality despite a simpler interface.

Also, it is Free Software, which Trillian isn't.

It appears Messenger is just down, try accessing http://messenger.msn.com and you'll probably see an error message.

I'm sorry, but I want it all!

    How complicated is Instant Messaging???

Not even half as complicated as HTTP protocol.

So, please, someone force them all to use a common protocol!

Gaim is nice, and I use it every day, but really, it is quite a system hog on Windows. Personally, I prefer the MSN user interface (pre-bloating, that is), but need access to my AIM contacts. I've got an SIP-AIM bridge to allow Windows Messenger to sign on to AIM on my todo list.
