Today we announced the Release Candidate of Service Pack 1 for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 is now available for general download. I’ve been running this for awhile now on a couple of my servers and it runs great. This will be the last general beta before got RTM with the update in Q1 of calendar year 2011. As we have talked about before and what I’ve been demoing for awhile now is the two major features of this update are Dynamic Memory and RemoteFX.

  • Dynamic Memory allows the allocation of a range of memory (min and max) to individual VMs, enabling the system to dynamically adjust the VM’s memory usage based on demand. This provides more consistency in system performance enabling better manageability for administrators.
  • Microsoft RemoteFX leverages the power of virtualized graphics resources and advanced codecs to recreate the fidelity of hardware-assisted graphics acceleration, including support for 3D content and Windows Aero, on a remote user’s device. This allows for a local-like, remote experience.

To download the RC please go to our TechNet Evaluation Center. We also have full documentation that you can download here.

One thing to note is if you have been running the Beta of SP1 on any of your machines you’re going to have to uninstall that first then install the RC. We don’t support build to build upgrades.

Enjoy folks!

Installing it now on the 64bit Windows 7. The IT developers version wouldn't go on earlier but no problems should be seen with the RC release. Novice users have been advised however that this is not the final version of SP1 for Windows 7. The previous version of Windows Vista saw the RCs for both SP1 and SP2 go on and run until the final version of each was available without problems. With the continued improvements seen with the new version none are expected. The installation is smooth running.

Installing WSUS on Server 2008 R2 SP1 RC is broken - the role cannot be added. With SP1 RC uninstalled from the same server WSUS will install.  I have found another person online with the same issue, MS might want to take a look at that...
